Never owned an iPad, need advice please.

Again I second the above reply. Much easier to read. If there were a 14 incher I would purchase that.

I got the 9.7" IPP when it launched and it works just as fine now as it did when I bought it. I think you should be ok with your 3-4 year timeline as long as Apple doesn't completely change the OS to something unusable, but that's unlikely.

What size iPad to get is a lot like trying to decide on a part of shoes. You go and try a bunch or pairs on and see which fit the best. If you have access, go to a store where you can spend some time on each size and see which fits you best.

Pick it up, carry it a bit (though probably not out the door!). See the differences in the weight that each size brings. How do you plan to use it. If you'll be carrying it around a lot, maybe the 12.9 is too big. Maybe you'll love the big screen and not care about the weight. Point is, you're never going to know unless you go "try a few on".
