Need help with continuity and notifications

Yesterday I decided to pick up a MacBook Pro and retire the Air and in doing so I have finally connected handoff and iMessages (disabled all that on the air).

The problem I have is the MBP is taking over my notifications on my iPhone and Apple Watch. This is fine when I'm sitting in front of the MBP but if I am in another part of my work or home I have no idea any messages came through.

Is there a setting to make message notifications play on all devices or at least stop the MBP from taking them all? Or is there a way to just disable everything and still use the MBP for iMessage and FaceTime? I can put the 11.3 beta back on my iPhone and use iCloud messages to keep them in sync.

I was under the impression that whichever device you're currently using is the device that will get the notification.

Ive been reading a bit on this today and it seem like a bug in High Sierra thats been a problem since October.

Its supposed to give a notification on both the phone and the Mac at the same time like it does when a FaceTime call comes in. The issue is if you leave the Mac open or you use an iMac that is always on you won't ever know you got a message if you are away from the computer.

This got me today when I was outside and the MBP was on in the house. I wasn't using it but it got the notification so I never knew I had a message until my phone rang asking if I was ever going to answer the persons question.

It only affects iMessage.

What happens if you leave your computer on, but don't use it for a few minutes, and have your phone sitting down with the screen off? Does your notification for iMessage come to the phone or the computer?

And you have iMessage on the iMac setup with your phones number as well as notifications?

Yes. I have my phone number as well as the email address I use as my Apple ID set up.

Well thats interesting.

Ill have to play around with it some more at work tomorrow. I think it has something to do with the proximity of the devices. Earlier today I had the MBP open in the kitchen and I was across the house and my watch gave me a notification which is good. Once I got near the MBP though it took over the notifications.

I guess I need to see if I can turn that off somehow.

I've noticed my notifications haven't worked properly for some time. Never worried about it though. The only thing that comes to my MBP is phone calls.
