One day it was alerting; the next not. I am limited in tech knowledge, but the settings, sounds, etc. seem to make no difference

I am assuming you tried the usual suspects:
  • mute switch
  • Volume keys
  • Do Not Disturb feature

Anyway, set an alarm and see if you get notified or go through the alert sounds in the sound settings to see if you can hear any of them. If you can, then you may have a corrupt setting or iOS version. You can try going to Settings - General - Reset and then selecting "Reset All Settings". Alternatively, you can restore your device.
