My Maps wouldn't turn off - drains battery

I have an iphone 6 with iOS 9.3.4? (next update says (9.3.5). I used maps to find a location, when I was finished I selected 'end' but I could still see the blue banner on my home screen that said "touch to go back to navigation". I went back to navigation to push 'end' again and there was no 'end' option. I had to shut down my phone to turn it off. I have used the maps app a lot and this is a new problem.

Next time double tap the home button and swipe up the Maps app instead of restarting your phone.
I do that with all my navigation apps.
