my iphone5 shows the message "cannot connect to server".

I can't get incoming email and I can't send out email on my iphone5 - because somehow the connection to the server is dropped/broken. What kinds of situations could cause this problem and how can I fix it?

Do you have a good network connection? Are you using the correct ID and password for your e-mail? Have you restarted your device?
