My iphone 6 home buttons gives a miss sometimes. How can I check if problem is with hardware or software?

Welcome to iMore! The only way to check for a software issue would be to run an iTunes restore in recovery mode, set up as a new iPhone, and test it out for a few days to see if the problem persists. Personally, it's not worth it to me for such a minor problem. From a hardware perspective, take your iPhone into an Apple Store and have them run a test. That could possibly extract a hardware issue.
