There is no place on the side of this phone for a SIM card

You may have a CDMA version? Sprint or Verizon? Which don't use SIM cards.

Even the Sprint and Verizon version of the iPhone 4s have a SIM card slot. The SIM was/is for international use.

To the OP, are you sure that it is an iPhone 4s? If it is a Sprint or Verizon iPhone 4 (not 4s), then it will not have a SIM card.

If it is an iPhone 4s, look on the side of the device for a very small hole and poke a paperclip in there.

Yep, has to have a SIM card slot if it is an iPhone.

If no SIM slot then it isn't a 4s, its a 4. The 4s is a "world phone" and only 1 version as opposed the 4 which had GSM and CDMA versions.
