'Hold' and 'Mute' Button Malfunctions on iPhone 6

I was on a conference call recently and after muting my microphone, was unable to unmute it. On another call, the hold button wouldn't stay on and, in any case, 'on' or 'off', the person on the other end of the call could hear me.

Now I'm a little nervous using my iPhone 6 in conference call mode. I have installed the latest operating system. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there are fix?

I'd use a headset with a physical mute switch if I needed to regularly be on conference calls...

I use my iPhone 6 Plus (iOS 8.3) for long conference calls; I've never had any issue with muting, and I mute/unmute every call--numerous times.

I had a conference call last week and had no problems muting then unmuting.
