My calendar events have disappeared how do I get them back?

Future calendar events have disappeared! All of a sudden all I had was reoccurring events from about 2 years ago showing up on my calendar. All of these events were reoccurring events that have since been stopped but are all of a sudden back and current reoccurring events are gone! I updated to IOS 8.1 yesterday and also synced to iTunes yesterday but I didn't change any settings. My iCloud is on and all of my calendars are on in settings. I was using the calendar that was on my phone when I bought the phone new. Any help would be great I feel lost!!!

when you go into calendar app- go to where it says calendars and then make sure all of them are checked
