Moving photos from old computer to new.

Plan on selling my iMac and buying a new Mac book pro. Do you have anything that walks you through, what to do before you sell the old computer and how to transfer to new one? Looking specifically for help on moving photos. Thanks

Prefer to use external drive. Just not sure how.
