Missing messages from restore

iMore Question

Hi everyone
would appreciate some help, I have recently tried to erase and restore my iPhone 11 back to my last back up a couple of days ago which contained a text I need from a blocked number ( was still sitting in inbox)

the message would have been on my last back up but for some reason hasn’t shown up after the restore?
I tried again by unblocking the the number and setting to the last back up but again no luck still.

is there a hole where it won’t restore from a number that’s been previously blocked ?

is there anything else I can try? The message is importantly needed for a court case and my phone provider cannot obtain deleted messages

I haven’t hooked my phone up to a computer or iTunes in years but could get access to a computer if I can try something there?

appreciate any help

I was under the impression you were referring to a text message until you mentioned “inbox”. Please clarify. Thanks.

If “Messages in the Cloud” is enabled on your device, the contents of the Messages.app are no longer stored in your phone’s backup. They are instead retrieved from iCloud directly once the phone is restored.

You can check if Messages in the Cloud is enabled, follow this iMore article: https://www.imore.com/how-turn-messages-icloud#turnon and check if the toggle next to the Messages.app is on.

This Apple Support article mentions what is included and not in an iCloud backup: https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT207428
