Migrating from Google Photos to Apple Photos - Library Size Difference?

Hello everyone, first post here. I am finally going all-in on Apple Photos from Google Photos and I have recently added a 2TB Seagate External drive to my 2017 MacBook Pro (latest model and OSX version).

I have all of my photos organized on a NAS (Synology) and I have created a System Photos Library on my external since my internal drive will not be big enough (300GB of photos and videos).

I imported all of my photos/videos into Photos app. It appears I have them all but the size of my Photos library only shows 28GB on the external drive (?). I made sure that "download original photo size" was checked in the preferences.

I am worried about compression and would like to have the original sizes in my local Photos library. Am I missing a critical step or not thinking about this correctly?

Thanks for the help in advance. Love the site and also enjoy watching MacBreak Weekly for the last several years.

Hopefully someone who takes a good deal of photos as well as exports/imports them to an external drive respond directly to your question. With that in mind, wouldn't it have been easier to transfer the photos directly from Google to your external drive?
