I have just got a 9.7" Ipad Pro based partly on the fact that I could get full function Excel and Word. Everything I can find on the net makes me believe that this is the case. But it seems MS want a 360 subscription to access full functions. The apps have the word 'essential' by them. Can anyone point me to a definitive answer or am I doing something wrong.

Looks like what D was trying to say is that the apps do need the Office365 to edit and create but to just view you can do it for free

Exactly. I use Office on my 9,7 iPad Pro and only can edit documents with 365 subscription.
