Messages are gone

So I have the option for text messages to never delete. However yesterday all my text messages were gone except for 2 senders. But then when I message someone all their messages suddenly reappeared. Is this is iOS 9 glitch?

Haven't heard of that one but anything is possible, have you tried a re-boot?

Thank you just did that and they all reappeared.
