I really really want a 13" retina pro what do you guys think, and should I buy more onboard storage or will an external ssd do me fine

Depends on what you plan to use it for. If you're planning on keeping a ton of media on there, you're going to run out of SSD space really fast and you'll need to go external. Otherwise, it's a fantastic machine and well worth the price.

If money is the issue, upgrade the RAM before the SSD size. Otherwise it depends on how much stuff you need to store.

Since the MBP Retina comes with SSD stock...buying a small USB portable driver would be the most cost effective way to have increased storage on the go.

Spend that ridiculous SSD upgrade money from Apple on upping your RAM (like Karen suggested).

13" rMBP only comes in an 8GB RAM configuration. At least, I'm pretty sure it does. Didn't see any upgrade for sale when looking at configs for mine
