Maps seems to be improving

So today I decided to try the maps app again. Well I was pleasantly surprised, broad generic terms now returned lots of results. For example grocery store used to display 2 oddly named mom and pop stores. Now it lists 15 grocery stores near bye. Also I have noticed that maps only searches the actual map area displayed in the screen. Weird and different I know but if you pinch zoom out and search again the number of results increases. Kind of cool filters out cruft, still far from perfect but already a huge improvement from a week ago.

Until the stock Maps app lets me import my own custom POI lists, can let me create and customize a route with waypoints, and take a route with multiple waypoints and optimize it, my primary navigation needs will be met with my Garmin Nuvi that does all those tasks... I'll back that up with Navigon on my iPad & iPhone...

Nowhere near perfect but it's a darn sight better than the ghost town that was there at launch. They might actually pull this out.

There may something to the "crowd sourcing" aspect of apple maps... The more we use it as a whole, the better it should get... Nice to see Apple at least trying. I do the "report a problem" as often as I can.

It stays in my Junk Drawer folder (along with Stocks, Weather, Game Center, Safari and Passbook) until they spend some serious time and energy on it, and I'll use Google maps online until then.

Google Maps - as imperfect as it - has devoted thousands of people, lots of technology and several years to their Maps. Apple seemingly used a couple of interns locked in a closet since January parsing a multitude of disparate cartographer's info into their app - and are now seeking volunteer help (by way of users) to fix their screw up. That's how they make the big bucks - well that, and sue everybody.

Shockingly bad.

This is why Google Maps works so well. In the beginning, they licensed their maps, but now thanks to crowd sourcing, and in particular 100's of millions of people using iOS, Google no longer needs to license maps for most of the world. That said, it will take time. It took years before Google Maps became what it is today.

I said it before...google maps got me lost often. The bar isn't that high.

I agree. Google maps wasn't perfect. Gave me stupid directions a lot. So I don't know why everybody is up in arms about Apple maps. It's not that bad. Seems to me a lot of the problems are in Europe and in rural areas. Doesn't bother me. I live in the Chicagoland area, works just fine. Only thing missing for me is the Street view. And even then, seems like every time I tried to use Street view, I got nothing more than a bush or a tree blocking my view.

I'm sure Apple is working hard on updating the same. Most of the improvements will happen in the background and we will never notice it till we decide to use it. On that note, I have tested the maps in Midwest, enroute to Florida and the Denver area. I have had no problems.
