Maps Off Line

I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS6 with no apparent problems. I have used maps a couple of times with success. However, I have read a number of articles about maps offline and how the maps app will cache map info for areas surrounding your search location (e.g., San Francisco). I got the idea that this happens automatically, but on my phone it does not. Here in Colorado Springs only an area of maybe 6 miles radius is loaded so that it can be used off line -- nothing like the large areas mentioned in the articles. Is the off line capability not available on the 4? Am I doing something wrong?
