There is always the chance you could end up with a faulty device but realistically, no. The chances of that occurring a pretty darn slim.

I still have a first generation iPhone that fires up perfectly and has no issues with the backlit screen.

There's no guarantee on anything, but thankfully, with the best customer support on the market, if it did have an issue like that, chances are, Apple would replace it without question (maybe even out of warranty).

All the years I've been in these forums, I've never seen a thread where someone reports a burned out LED.
