Keep and upgrade my MBP Mid-2012, or buy new model?

I can't decide what I want to do here.

I have the mid-2012 MBP running 500GB SATA and 4 GB RAM.

I could upgrade the HDD to 500GB SSD and 16 GB RAM for about $400.

OR

I could sell this for a few hundred and upgrade to a new MBP......but thats going to cost me at least $1500 out of pocket.

Or I could check into the MacBook/Air line........

Anyone care to chime in?

Heck, I would pay the $400 to upgrade the RAM to 16 Gigs and get the SSD. That's a no-brainer to me. My 2009 model MacBook w/4 GB RAM could run El Capitan but the multi-colored ball would appear more times than not in the end, but more RAM could have solved that problem. Having said that, your MacBook is 3 years newer so upgrading the RAM and getting a SSD should do wonders for you, in my opinion.

Thanks. Thats really my only concern.....it has slowed down a bit. I wish it was lighter, but the new MBP aren't that much lighter anyways, Id have to go MacBook or MacBook Air

I currently use a MacBook Air for work and it has 8 GB RAM and an SSD. It's also running the latest macOS High Sierra version. Typically, I keep about 10 tabs open constantly and it has no problem handling whatever I throw at it on a daily basis so again, you should be fine. For personal use, I just bought a new 13" MacBook Pro (2017) w/8 GB RAM and an SSD, and this baby flies....

I just bought my daughter a refurb mid 2015 15” MBP Retina with 500GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, video card for about $1600. Replaced a 2012 model. These guys sell on EBay. I would review them but they are so good they hardly need a review.

I have a mid 2010 2.4 ghz model with 500 GB HDD and 4gb RAM... and I’m gonna go with a 256 GB SSD with 16GB ram because I have a thumb drive that holds 2TB.... I figure that’s gonna run me in the $250 range...
