Just got new iPhone 6 and why can't I send a text to my son's Android?

Just got new iphone 6 and can't send text to my son's android.

I went through the suggested steps on this site and the 5 steps shown on another but still not delivered. I have an iphone 5 for work and no problem with texting.

Do you have "Send as SMS" enabled in the Settings/Messages?
