I know that you can put your own ringtones on your phone but is there a way to put you own sounds for the sms? Thanks

It's possible but not without jailbreaking.

Then it's not. You can't do it stock. At least not yet. I don't know if that's something Apple will throw into the mix at some point. It would be nice.

I hope they do add the functionality to change the basic stock alters for SMS. People start going crazy when there are multiple iPhone in the same room. I guess we'll see in a few days time!
