Jailbreaking the 3gs. can i update with itunes?

i will be jailbreaking (and unlocking, since im on tmobile) my used 3gs when i get it. (its the older boot rom, serial 8924***) but in the tutorial unlike my 3g, and 2g, that i have jail broken before, it tells me to download the 3.1.2 restore file from there site and to NOT do it through itunes.

in the tutorial im reading now about my 3gs it says nothing.. just to update to 3.1.2. how am i suppose to restore it? do i download through itunes??

No problem in doing right thru iTunes. Maybe the guide is made before Blackra1n came out..

was the issue before because of the updated baseband?
