Or, how do I restore an unlocked iPhone, if it comes to that.

Sorry to sound like a complete noob, but I've seen many forums/articles/tutorials tonight, all with competing information, and I just want some good answers. I've jailbroken my iPhone 2G twice tonight, using redsn0w 7.2, with, sucess- except I have a lingering "No Service" indicator at the top left. The suggestions I've read online lead me to believe checking the "Unlock" box during the redsn0w process would possibly fix this, allowing me to reconnect to AT&T after a successful jailbreak.

But there's the rub. I don't feel any real need to unlock. Not the biggest fan of Ma Bell, but it's my contract-service at the moment and I can't really do anything about it. No, what I desire is a simple jailbroken iPhone 2G, without all the carrier-swapping goodness. So what to do?

If I do indeed check the Unlock and everything goes as well as can be expected, how would I restore said iPhone 2G to a virgin state even a Genius couldn't detect? That's the real question, as I'm pretty sure checking the box will allow me to connect to AT&T and have Cydia, et al. I guess the real question is just how cold my feet are, and whether or not I can "undo" everything I want to do to my poor phone, as I have been able to do with just the jailbreaks.

Thanks so much in advance for your answers. I'm sure this is a pretty asinine question, but I'd really just like a straight answer.

Sincerely,

I assume you have an ATT sim if you don't want to unlock. Restore the phone to factory settings without jailbreaking through itunes. That will automatically activate the phone like an normal restore. Then jailbreak the phone again and don't check the unlock box. Phone will activate through ATT like normal.

I am unclear, which service do you have. Unlocking through redsnow will allow you to put any gsm sim card in it and get that providers service, where available. You can always undo these jailbreaks by restoring the phone through itunes, not sure if it would be undetetctable by a genius, but the folks at apple won't know the difference.
