itunes trying to reset my ipad

i have had an ipad for about 4 months now but I have never connected it to itunes. I tried tonight but it now shows up as if the ipad is a new device. how do i get around this?

To iTunes, it is a new device. It shouldn't erase anything on your device, but to be on the safe side, backup to iCloud before continuing.

hmm tried connecting it again and it didnt even give me the same menu as before which is weird it just registered onto my itunes and now i can do what i had wanted.
