Itunes/Iphone ringtone help

I have a ringtone on my computer, already in the .m4r format, but iTunes doesn't recognize it. I can't add it to my library on iTunes, so obviously I can't transfer it to my iPhone 3G. I emailed it to myself just to see if the file worked, but my iPhone won't even play the file - says it can't play that format. Any ideas?

I know how to make ringtones. I *have* a ringtone already, and have searched the forum but can't find anyone who has my specific issue. I cannot add the ringtone to iTunes. I drag it to iTunes and nothing happens. I have tried to add the ringtone manually to iTunes and nothing happens.
