iTunes and beach ball mode

Every time I plug my iPad or iPhone into my MacBook iTunes immediately hangs for 5-10 minutes or just crashes. What is with iTunes and devices being plugged in? This is MacBook Pro '13 with an i7 and 16gig RAM. The only app that gives it fits is Office 2011.

Wow...I don't know what to tell you. Try rebooting all devices and make sure you have the latest iTunes app installed on your MacBook.Also try disabling everything else that may be running in the background on your MacBook to see if that helps...

It literally took me 20 minutes to sync it that time. I didn't think it would happen. It has been getting worse.
