Is YouTube "real" YouTube?

Hey everyone.

I had an unlocked 1.0.9 iPhone a few months ago and YouTube never worked so I never had a chance to play with it.

I'm just wondering; does the YouTube application show ALL videos from YouTube? For example, if I were to search "iPhone" on it, would it return only 5 or so results, or would it show the 300,000 that there probably are? (I'm assuming that wouldn't be all on one page :p)

Also,

Can someone please quote me on how much data the average YouTube video (on an iPhone) uses? (I'm with Rogers, enough said!)

Almost real

It does show all the videos available, but the list is very short, and if you want to see all the results, it is a little complicated (you have to load the next screen, because it shows only the top 25 results in one screen at a time).

Then, when you open a video, most of the times it will play, but once in a while, it will give you a message indicating that the format of the video is incompatible. As far as I know that is due to the fact that YouTube was not originally compatible with the iPhone and some videos are still not compatible, although most are, and they are continuing to convert the videos that are not compatible yet.

Youtube mp4

This is because Youtube has to convert the videos to mp4 before they are compatible with the iphone. Usually this doesn't take very long (especially for popular or new videos).

You can access at least 98% of all the videos from the real site. Every new video is automatically encoded for both the real site and the mobile site/iPhone app when it is uploaded, so new videos are always there. The ones that may not work are generally older stuff, but I honestly can't recall the last time I wanted to see something and had a problem.

Example... The day the news broke about that country singer (I can't recall his name) beating up an audience member, I pulled out the iPhone, searched, and was given a choice of about 15 different videos of it to watch.

When the iPhone was first released, the YouTube app had a poor selection, at this point though, it has pretty much everything.

Thanks everyone, that's what I was looking for. Now I'm excited for that app.

Does anyone have any idea of the average MB for one video, say, 3 minutes long or something? My plan will have a 750MB cap on it so I'll have to watch out :(

My friend actually has had quite many problems with his first gen. iPhone and youtube, any others, or is it just bad luck?

Found the answer while looking for something else...
Consider that opening an email with a 5 megapixel picture in it, or downloading a 3 minute video on YouTube each takes about 2MB of data. That's why AT&T has created two Data Global Plans for iPhones with lower rates in 41 countries*.
