Is the S really worth it?

My wife just bought a 3G and it's nice, but I went to load Star Watch and it only works on the 3GS. What other shortcomings does the 3G have?

Also, the ringer has been silinced. I've been through the utilities and double checked settings. She has a song set for ring tone and the volume is set for max, but when an incoming call comes in it only vibrates.

The 3GS has a compass, so any applications that require a compass to work obviously will not work. The 3GS also has an auto-focus camera, and some applications require that to work (or at least work best with the auto-focus camera). Beyond that, however, there isn't too much difference. There is a speed boost with the 3GS, but in my opinion it's not as pronounced as some would suggest.

If you take many pics w/ your phone it's definitely worth it. I have both and the camera quality is way better. I also think the S is way faster. Everything is just smoother feeling.

The 3Gs is noticeably faster with very little to no app lag...also when syncing with iTunes, the backup process is much quicker.

Why do you ask? Are you thinking about exchanging the one she just got? If so, yes. Do it. The S is definitely worth it. If not, are you thinking about what to get for yourself? If that is the case, I'd definitely wait until June or July when the next gen iPhone comes out! It's not that far away, and you'll be thrilled to have the latest device I'm willing to bet!!

I've used both in hand and I bought the 3gs from how it feels - it's just FASTER. I mean loading apps, even the internet seemed faster. Also it's newer, and you gotta love that :p

For me its not only the speed, which is critical, but the screen feels so much better. I don't have to use a screen protector to keep it clean, just wipe it on a sleeve and its good.

I just got a replacement 3G under AppleCare. It's all nice and shiny, but still as sluggish as my old one. I've used 3GS's and they're a bit faster/better, but I'm not going to get one until the 4th gen ones come out.

It just seems wasteful to scrap a totally brand new 3G because i want something a little bit better.

Hands-down the 3GS for me. Not in the least because of the 32GB instead of 16GB. I've jailbroken my phone so memory also becomes more of an issue. I'm backgrounding apps as if I'm working on a mini-laptop. And I have to disagree with the speed being only a bit faster. This thing blazes compared to my old 3G. I'd never want to go back to my old phone and am happy to have made the purchase.

It was for me because I needed 32GB to store all my media. The 3G just just did not cut it for me
