Is the BBC player only available for the new TV?

I read that the BBC iPlayer is now available on Apple TV but is that only on the newer Apple TVs or can all Apple TVs now add it with a free update?

Although I can't say for certain at this time, more than likely however, the aforementioned player is or will be available on the new TV and the 2nd and 3rd generation models before it.
