Here is the the US the 8G iPhone is $199, which seems to be the going rate for most new smartphones these days. Some BB are even higher until the rebate comes in the mail. The new Palm Pre is "rumored" to be even more expensive. I am sure that you can always find a smartphone that is cheaper but I do not think that the iPhone is un-competitively price within the market.

The cost to use a iPhone is the same as it is to use any blackberry or other PDA phone...

You know, I was thinking about this the other day. I think the problem is aimed at the concept of "the iPhone is the smartphone for the rest of us" - ie, non-business, non PDA users. Those people aren't used to spending $30 a month extra for data charges, so to them the monthly cost seems really high.

To a BB or Treo user, the charge isn't bad (although I was using my Treo with a $20 plan) so we don't complain, but my guess is the vast majority of the 16 mil iPhone users are first time smartphone purchasers, and don't have the same expectation of a high data plan cost.

I definitely see this view. But personally, I use almost twice the data with an iphone as opposed to a blackberry. The web and apps are just so much more usable.

I also agree. I used my Treo 700wx a lot. But I never used the internet on it as much as I do on the iPhone. Likewise, with my Treo, I didn't have WiFi, and I figured I never needed it nor did I want it. Verizon's EVDO was perfect for everything I needed. Now with the iPhone, it is so amazing on the web, I use it constantly, and while 3G is Fantastic, having WiFi on the iPhone rocks.

And the GPS is the icing on the cake.

Everything is so integrated on the iPhone, contacts, maps, Safari, Phone...they all work so well together. On the Treo 700wx everything worked ok, but not at all together.

I have even replaced certain tasks that I used to do on the computer. Its just so easy to do it on the iphone.
