Is a new Apple Watch still good after sitting in the box for several years?

I was given a new Apple Watch as a Christmas present over 2 years ago but I never took it out of the box (crazy, I know). I would love to begin using it now but was told by an Apple representative that it may no longer be good. Is there a reason I cannot just begin to charge it and start using it as if I just received it?

Why would it not be good? Was this "Apple representative" trying to sell you a new watch?
