Why won't the ipod menu show up when ipod is plugged into car USB.

If the car has a iPod dock , once you have plugged in the iPod , you can select the iPod source from your head unit . But not all cars with a USB port will accept a iPod . Does your car have a built in iPod dock or does it just support a usb stick .on some cases it will not support any of the two and the usb is just a charging point ?
