That seems more a description of the device than an indication of current capacity.
I don't think so. As I say, I have a nano that Apple describe as '8 GB' and iTunes definitely says 'Capacity: 7.50 GB' in the section equivalent to that shown in the pic I posted above.

This is from an interview with macwelt.

Are system and applications stored in a firmware or in the Flash memory iPhone?
The entire software is in the Flash memory. This reserves thus seat on the 4 and/or 8 GB inserted memory. According to Apple statements however „clearly under a half gigabyte “. The advantage: System and software updates are at any time possible without technical expenditure. The disadvantage: From anyway to sumptuous memory are not missing some hundred megabyte, which is needed for system and software.

Thats the source, and everyone is running with it.

Thanks. I guess the 'screen shot' used in the keynote must have been faked then. They seem to be scrambling to have it finished by June so not having iTunes syncing sorted in January is hardly surprising.

Here's the equivalent pic for my nano:

I guess the real iTunes iPhone screen will look something like that then!

At the bottom of the same screen it has:

Capacity: 7.50 GB

Audio: 6.72 GB
Other: 45.4 MB
Free: 761.4 MB

6.72 GB + 45.4 MB + 761.4 MB is pretty close to 7.50 GB. Sometimes round numbers just happen :)

And in my regular scheduled dig at Archie, one could store more music for less on a Treo 680 with a SD SDHC card for much less than an IPhone e.g. $200 with contract for the 680, and $70 for a 4GB SD card, or $90 for the 8GB SD card. Less than $300 in total.

Life would be pretty empty without the tilt sensor however....

Actually I think it could just be a binary vs decimal thing.

7.50 GB = 8053063680 B (7.50 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024)

For my iPod:

Audio: 6.72 GB = 7215545057 B
Other: 45.4 MB = 47605351 B
Free: 761.4 MB = 798385766 B

Total = 8061536174 B

But where's the OS?

This could mean that the iPhone bit of iTunes will report much less than 7.5 GB.

lots of talk and mention of the Helio....sounds like it offers the features that many want (gps, 3g, etc). and more importantly, it's design is just perfect for those who love clumsy slide-out keyboards and bulky/heavy devices.

too bad they can't smoosh all of those goodies into a more thin and useable form factor.

It's all due to the dual-slider design. That's just what happens when you have 2 entry systems: 1 dialpad, 1 qwerty. As far as usability, I'm going to go ahead and say data entry will be quicker on the Ocean and much more usable as a communicator too (do we know what IM system the iPhone is using yet?)

Still to put in perspective: it's thinner and lighter than any Hiptop/Sidekick and yet has much more in features. Need I point out how popular those are? I think for what they were working with in design specifications, the Ocean came out pretty well for the size.

If you go ahead and remove all the hardware keyboards, you'll be the size of the iPhone fairly quickly. Or rather, add some hardware keyboards to the iPhone and you'll see that balloon in size too.

Actually there are more and more devices which offer these features, merely because they have become a lot cheaper to provide. The next IPhone better step up, because by 2008 these are going to become base functions. They are for me already, and my next handheld MUST have 3G and GPS. I want a keyboard too but that is just me.

Edit: Apparently the Ipod operating system is about 40 MB big, and is stored on the media (HDD or flash) also.

Thanks. So probably 'Other: 45.4 MB' is the OS on my iPod. If that's so we could probably expect iTunes to record something like this for an '8 GB' iPhone (with no music or other content on it):

Audio: 0 GB
Other: 400 MB
Free: 7.15 GB

assuming an OS size of 400 MB. The 4 GB iPhone would be something like:

Audio: 0 GB
Other: 400 MB
Free: 3.15 GB

'3.15 GB' might come as a bit of shock to some who bought a '4 GB' iPhone.

This all assuming macwelt are right of course.

Also, for the UK, NOT VODAFONE! There is simply no point to an internet-connected device when connection to the internet is prohibitively expensive. Vodafone UK data charges are STILL ?2.35 (about $4.60) per MB.
Apparently Vodafone and Orange are still fighting it out for the iPhone in the UK:

http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2007/05/vodafone_and_or.html

The good news is that both carriers have recently introduced new, much nicer data pricing. Orange have several options including a flat rate of ?8 per month:

http://news.zdnet.co.uk/communications/0,1000000085,39286970,00.htm

and Vodafone have a complex system where most users would probably end up paying ?1 per day:

http://online.vodafone.co.uk/dispat...geLabel=template11&pageID=PPP_0052&tabIndex=1

I'd characterise this as Orange being pretty cheap, and Vodafone still being bit a expensive, but much, much better than they were before.
