iPhone XR isn’t connecting to headphone mic. How do I change the built in mic default to headphones?

Basically, I plug in my headphones and call someone, stick the phone in my pocket and they hear me muffled or far away, that was when I realized the phone mic was the one that was active instead of the headphone mic. Is there a way for me to change this on settings?

Also, my headphones are brand new as well as the phone so I shouldn’t see any issues with aging or wear and tear.

I’m going to assume the headphones are fully seated in the XR’s lightning port. With that being said, go to General → Accessibility→ Call Audio Routing and then select either “Automatic” or “Bluetooth Headset”.
