iPhone voice capability gone silent!

hey - for some reason, when i call someone/they call me, i can no longer hear anything! voicemails can be left and i hear them fine. any ideas?

make sure I have this straight:

When you call/someone calls you, you can't hear them. But you can hear voicemails and other sounds from normal use?
