I am trying to set up my new iphone 5s when i put in my email address for apple ID and press next a message comes up a reads email address taken I have had this email for20 years so Im the one that has it but the phone does not know it

Are you in the process where you set up a new AppleID vs entering an existing AppleID? Make sure in the set up you're not selecting to create a new AppleID.
