iPhone photo storage

I keep a very little # of photos on my phone. Right now I have less than 10. Is it possible those few photos account for over 1 gb of space? Seems odd. How would I reduce the # shown in this screenshot?

Do you have any photos in the recently deleted folder?
Are you using the iCloud Photo Library? If so, have you accounted for that space?

Just checked and there were about 85 pics in the deleted folder which I have since emptied. Not using iCloud Photo Library. Attached is where I stand now after emptying the deleted folder. Still not sure what makes up that 1.7 gigs.
