Well it's pretty much official... there will be no iPhone Nano and I'm actually glad to hear that.

Tim Cook said in the conference call today - "You know us, we're not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That's not who we are. That's not why we're here. We'll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone."

And then Steve Jobs said this a while back. Somehow I missed it...

"I wasn't alive then, but from everything I've heard, Babe Ruth only had one home run. He just kept hitting it over and over again. I think that the traditional game in the phone market has been to produce a voice phone in a hundred different varieties. But as software starts to become the differentiating technology of this product category, I think that people are going to find that a hundred variations presented to a software developer is not very enticing. And most of the competitors in this phone business do not really have much experience in a software platform business."

So there you have it, pretty much puts the last nail in the coffin of a iPhone Nano.

Yeah, both good points and I agree with you that they will not be making an iPhone nano. Steve's comment hinted at that, but then they talked about the "price umbrella" so that got people thinking.

But this latest comment by Tim really seems to give the message that they will not be going lower than $199 for the foreseeable future.

Apple will never, ever, ever make an iPhone nano...

...until the moment they *do*.

However, I want an iPhone HD, and I can't see them making a bigger display and a smaller one, since that would really fracture the platform...

Hmmmm

This is the one thing that gets me about Apple though...

It seems like every time you buy something from them you find out that the better version will be coming out at the end of the week. (obvious exaggeration)

I am waiting until the end of Feb to get my iphone, but I have this sinking feeling that within a short while I will wish I had just waited. Either the HD or the 32GB will be released. Just my luck.

This article did help me win an argument with a friend though. He was sure that the nano was coming. I win!

I think this could be applied to any technology. Things always get better, smarter, faster, lighter. You won't always have the latest and greatest (unless you are a rich bastard!!! :D ) so just enjoy it when you do!

I started a Apple blog site for the sole purpose of having a good excuse to keep buying new stuff as it was released without as much guilt :p

If you want to play in this game of electronics it's just the way it's going to be. It's not just Apple though. Just something you have to get used to.

Exactly. Technology is constantly evolving and you will never have the latest and greatest until you buy what was just released.

Makes me think of a Simpsons episode where Homer buys a computer (#5) which the salesman tells him it's the latest and greatest and while driving home he sees a billboard advertising the release of #6...which leads to the inevitable "D'oh!"

I guess you guys are right.

I just wish I had the money to keep up to date on all of the latest stuff.

I suppose I mention Apple because the things they release seem to be far more desirable than other companies. Yes, a lot of companies come up with great products, but it seems to be hit or miss. IMO just about everything Apple comes out with at this point seems to do amazingly well on the market.

They even mentioned in that article, they don't want a part of the low-end phone market. They do such a great job of keeping that, high quality, must have, vibe to their products.

I think this is more to do with the belief that soon, ALL mobile phones will be smartphones. I don't think Apple wants to enter a market that people believe will be extinct sooner rather than later.
