iPhone "demo" impressions...

So, I stopped by an ATT store a little while ago to finally satisfy my curiosity about the device that I've been vowing to get since January. I wanted to wait until I could actually get one before playing with the device in person. I'll be picking it up Wednesday or Thursday.

The first thing I checked out was, naturally, the keyboard. I tried it "both" ways - holding in my right hand and typing with my right thumb, and holding with both hands and typing with both thumbs. Maybe it was designed for my average sized hands, but the keyboard was a good as anything I've used on a handheld device - Treos, 8125/8525, Blackjack, etc. I found it VERY easy to hold and type one handed, and the lack of tactile sensation didn't bother me at all.

I played on the internet for a couple of minutes and visited a few of the sites that I spend a lot of time on and found EDGE to work on this device at least as smoothly as on my 8125.

Google Maps works so much better on this phone than it does on a WM device. It was obviously designed in coordination with Apple.

Just based on my initial impressions, this phone will do everything that I need a converged device to do as well as my current (badly malfunctioning) 8125 - so I'm sold. Given that the device is smaller, lighter, even more intuitive (again, initial impression), and the interface seems so well thought-out - I ordered. I'm going now to update my iTunes software so I can be ready to roll as soon as I unbox the new baby...

Glad you had a great first experience. I hope you have many more one you receive your own. I have had a great week+2days with my iPhone.

Congrats!

Congratulations! Hopefully you will be happy with it. I know that after a week I'm loving mine even more than the first day.

Yeah, you know, I see all these complaints about what the iPhone CAN'T do, and it appears to do everything I NEED it to do - and well, at that. It'll be a huge bonus if Apple allows Flash support (appears to be forthcoming) and adding further BT feature support would be nice, but I'm pretty happy with what it can do. BT stereo - I'm not so sure about this one. I've never listened to BT headphones, but I have a pretty critical listening ear. I plan to buy compatible Shure earbuds because I know the sound is pretty hi-fi. As long as my BT headset works for phone calls, I'll be happy. BT GPS support - now that would be nice, but there again, seems like that should be a no brainer firmware update...

I can make phone calls, text my peeps, browse the web, check my email, get the weather, use google maps - oh, and listen to music. That's what I do on my current phone and it's bloated to the max with 3rd party software. I've never actually tried to watch a movie because I don't even know where to start, and it appears I have to have additional handset software. This has it all built in, and sounds like only some minor tweaking involved.

I guess the few big issues I have are lack of memory expansion (either with a larger flash memory or by adding an expansion slot - ideal, imho), non-standard SIM, maybe lack of 3G (although it's going to be a while before my area has access) and, well, I can't think of anything else at this point that doesn't appear at least possible.

Yep, looking forward to using it!

happy to hear as well. my mantra has been exactly that; many probably don't "need" all that the Treos offer but they owned them anyways. i'm seeing more and more people either finally "admitting" it or perhaps "realizing" it. it might not be a desktop replacement but i think it's a device that offers me the best user experience of any device i've ever owned, it's fun and easy to use while providing most all of what i need. unfortunately for me it can't replace my Blackberry Pearl due to email limitations at this time.

congrats and enjoy

I'm actually considering adding another number for the iPhone and keeping my current $20 unlimited data for an HTC Advantage later this year. That'll be my business phone, anyway. I can keep it docked in my car and just use the bt headset with it, while the iPhone can be my personal phone. I REALLY hate giving up that $20 data plan that I have that can be used with WM or Palm. Those suckas at ATT made the data plan for the iPhone incompatible with everything else :-(

Re. email limitations, is it just a corporate server issue? I'm planning to add my charter and bellsouth smtp accounts...

for starters, our IT department isn't supporting the device at this time. secondly, i must have subfolder availability/access on the device. third, i must have access to all folders in my inbox tree. fourth, i must have a way of deleting all msg transmissions at once as the number of transmissions is voluminous.

like you it has become a personal phone/media of sorts for anyone of us in the family to use.
