iPhone dead. Need to recover data

Hello Friends,
My dad was talking on the iphone 3gs while it was charging and it died all of a sudden. Now it won't charge or start up. When I touched the phone it was very hot. I don't care about the phone since I am switching to a droid but there is some data in there that I want recovered. I was wondering given that the phone became very hot it is probably the battery that has died and was thinking that I should first try replacing the battery. Other than that is there any way to extract data from the iPhone's SSD?

Hold power button and home button down for about a minute ... I have had the dead freeze before, it takes a minute but hopefully it will come back up.
