Iphone 7 vs Iphone 6S today?

iMore Question

I have to purchase a new phone today. Due to the new Iphone coming in December, would it be a bad idea purchasing a 6S? Would buying a 7 make a huge difference long run?

Between the 6s and the 7 there is no significant difference, apart from the home button and the lack of the jack.
A 6S will suffice for years to go.

However, if you can afford the difference in price, go with the 7.

If you want the better and faster phone between the two, go with the 7. If you want the best iPhone today, go with the iPhone 7 Plus. Then 7 has stereo speakers, certified water resistance, an incredibly fast processor with more RAM for opening apps and switching between apps, and the list goes on. The 7 Plus also has an incredible camera, so keep that in mind when purchasing, depending on what you want from a smartphone

If you’re going to only use the device until December then you might as well buy the less expensive iPhone.

A friend of mine is in his 3rd year with his iPhone 6 Plus. It has 1GB RAM and 64GB Storage. He has literally no complaints about it. It still gets great battery life. I see him using it all day every day. A friend of mine at the training Facility has the same phone - no complaints. They'll prolly end up keeping them for 3-4 years, because that's way cheaper than upgrading a phone that... still works perfectly fine...

I went from 6 Plus to 6S Plus to 7 Plus. I think the only upgrade that was worth it was to the 6S Plus, and only for the increased RAM Capacity. That's it. The Camera upgrades are always fairly lackluster, and I wouldn't categorize the 7 Plus' camera as "incredible." It's a pretty average camera phone, given what cheaper options are delivering, and it will barely give any benefits over the 6S camera, other than that Telephoto Lens, which - frankly - is quite specific in its uses (and not really that useful IMO, given it lacks OIS and produces darker, noisier images).

If I were telling someone to get an iPhone, I'd point them to the 6S. The 7 isn't worth the cost premium over the 6S, and it will be another 2-3 years before Apple stops supporting the 6S. It can take you to 2020 if needed.

I have the 7 Plus right now, and I'm seriously contemplating keeping it for 3-4 years before upgrading. I'm not on any Social Networks or whatever, so my phone is back to being a utility - not the center of my life.

And I'd seriously ignore anything about processors and speed. You'd need to be some sort of super human to actually feel a difference in performance, in practice, between the 6S and the 7. It has been this way with flagship smartphones since 2013 or so (back when we had the Snapdragon 800 and (IIRC) the Apple A7). Yes, they tout 50% increase in this or that. You will never feel that in practical use, not with subsequent models. You have to go back more than 1 model to find a phone that you actually feel performs worse than the 7. The 6 models may feel that way, due to the low RAM Capacity (only 1GB), but the 6S and 6S Plus will not.

Real life is not a benchmark.

I don't personally think 3D Touch is worth the premium, but I guess that can be soundly argued, as it has varying effects on people's usage of the device (I don't use that many apps, so it's bound to affect me less than some others).
