iPhone 5s Dock cable plug in?

I recently purchased an iPhone 5s Dock from Apple.com. I noticed that when I plug a lightning cable into the dock it will charge my phone, but if I take a 30-pin cable, with a lightning converter on it, the dock will not work. It says that the "accessory is not supported." The 30-pin converter works just fine if plugged directly into the phone.

I purchased a dock from the apple store and had to return it because it wouldn't charge my phone, exchanged it for another one and had the same issue, ended up getting the Belkin dock and sync dock, personally I like it better than apples, if I decide to use a case I can and also it comes with it's own cable.

I'm seriously thinking about returning this. It's funny that I pay a large amount of money for a little adapter, that doesn't even work with another Apple product?
