iPhone 5 volume button down not working

My husbands iPhone 5 volume down button is not working at all. The up button works, the sound works fine and in the control center the volume slider works fine too. It's just the volume down button. It is out of warranty but was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if there were any tips? Thanks

Im starting to see a lot of this and power buttons not working.
I work in a repair center and i have been having to replace the volume flex assembly cable, it controls volume up, down, power button and vibrate switch.(i think the vibrate switch is on it)

Thanks for the info............is it a fairly cheap or expensive fix...........just trying to see if it's worth repairing.

Its a fairly cheap process. Go and get your iPhone repaired.
