I have tried all the OS's but haven't had an iPhone since the 3S. I have a change to grab an unlocked iPhone 5 32GB for $200. I know it's 3 years old but will it give me a good enough experience to see how the the ecosystem has changed since I've last used it?

I would suggest, if you can afford it, searching for a 5S. The 5S has a 64 bit processor, and Apple is transitioning most of their software to make use of this. This model also has the Touch ID feature which is a safe thing to have nowadays. The 5S will probably be supported for another two years, if Apple holds to their current support strategy.

I just picked up an ATT iPhone 5S 32 GB for $250~ which arrived yesterday so I would try to snag one of those if you can. Worth the markup for me.

However, I see a lot of iPhone 5's and 5c's still in use and people don't seem to be complaining about performance just yet. I think the 4s is having some kind of buffer effect.
