My iPhone has freezed at about 45%, not moving for the last 30 minutes. Just showing the white apple symbol. Any suggestions?

Didn't Apple stop signing that particular iOS version a while ago? Could that be the reason for the problems you are having? I am assuming you are displeased with iOS 8.1. If you've never installed it on your iPhone 5, you may want to reconsider because iOS 8.1 works well on my iPhone 5.
