iPhone 4s detection on the ocean

Hi -
We are going on a Cruise vacation. Does anyone knows if the iphone 4s location service work and can the satellites detect the phones location on the ocean?

You won't have much service. But, enough to make a call. Be careful though, it's very pricey. You could be looking at prices around $2.49 a minute.
