AT&T Halts iPhone 4 Orders as eBay Prices Hit $5K

AT&T has suspended orders of the iPhone 4 following huge demands and problems with their servers.

Apple yesterday announced that together with AT&T, it had received 600,000 preorders for the iPhone 4. It represents the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was supposedly the reason for order and approval system malfunctions. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling didn't mention recent reports that attributed the malfunctions to an untested fraud update that was applied to AT&T servers over the weekend.

Delivery for phones ordered yesterday had slipped to July 14, nearly three weeks after the June 24 launch date. If the thought of waiting weeks to get your hands on the iPhone 4 just makes your skin crawl, and you have money to burn, then eBay is your best shot.

Opportunistic folk who have secured pre-orders and recognise that they could probably make buckets of money from rabid Apple fans who just can't wait are selling their iPhone 4s on eBay for as much as $5,000. Sure you might be able to snap one up for somewhere between $500 and $700 (still hundreds of dollars more than what AT&T customers are paying) but for every sub-$1,000 listing, there's one for well over $1,000. TechCrunch reports that at one point, bidding for one iPhone 4 reached $5,000.
Did anyone manage to get themselves a pre-order through AT&T or Apple?

Some clown will pay something way over value. I am thinking we'll see prices that people will be willing to pay around 800.
