iphone 3g on at&t premier site

i was lokking thru my at&t acct's premier site and all other phones have an option for no-commitment price (i think u dont have to sign any contract) whereas iphone 3g does not show any no-commitment pricing but says "apple requires a 2-year commitment". I tried to buy the phone and was able to do it, but then how will i activate and sign up for the contract and internet? from what i heard, with 3g u have to activate at att or apple store? ny help appreciated...
