iPhone 2.0 Software: Keyboard improvements

Hi everyone,

I am very unhappy with the keyboard software of the 1.x OS. Above all the autocorrect feature is beneath contempt, it does not learn words of less than five characters length, some words will for whatever reason never be learned, upper/lowercase differences are not being learned (if a word is in the original dictionary as uppercase, it will stay uppercase forever, even if this is wrong), Umlauts cause problems, sometimes it is impossible to enter a character (you can only type it's neighbor characters on the keyboard), etc. etc.

Has anyone had the possibility to check the keyboard software in one of the 2.0 beta versions? Improvements for the keyboard will be essential for me when updating (I'll probably go for a Blackberry or Nokia E71 if these bugs stay unchanged). Did Apple change anything here? Or do they do it the Micro$oft way: Add new features and forget about the bugs...?

I have no idea if they have fixed anything but I totaly agree with you 100% they need to work on the keyboard big time. If they are hoping to compete in the business market where people are composing long emails and things of that nature they are going to learn real quick that the keyboard needs some work. Also they are going to need LANDSCAPE mode for email as well I cannot believe that they haven't done that yet. As well as add attachments to an email from the email program not from somewhere else on the phone. Anyways the one good thing is they are at least a lot faster at updates than anyone else out there so we at least have a chance.

I do agree that there should be an option for landscape mode keyboard across the board on all apps on the iPhone.

But I'm a huge fan of the keyboard. I initially had my reservations on a touch screen keyboard but honestly, looking back, I don't miss my Blackberry Curve's keyboard at all. I love screen real estate!

Though the tiny details that you mention for improvement are fair and just, I kind of like it the way it is.

The keyboard on the iPhone takes some getting use to, especially if you used other smartphone keyboards. It just takes sometime, but I am sure you will like it once you try it.

I have never had a single problem you are talking about, on either of the iPhones I have owned. Did you ever think that maybe your phone is busted, not the software?

I don't have an iPhone yet, but I have a Touch and I have practiced on the keyboard and I can honestly say I'm getting used to it and proficient. I'm used to having a physical keyboard on my phones (Treo 700wx, BB7520, BB7100i) but after practicing on my Touch, I don't think it will be a big deal to switch.

I should say that I think the keyboard is good but if apple put just a little bit more into it it could be great. I don't want to scare people off the iPhone just because of the keyboard.

While I tend to agree with you, I wish that one of us had thought to bring up this topic while there was still time for Apple to respond. I have not heard even a whisper that might suggest improvements in 2.0.

None of what you mention ever bothered me; I may of underused the keyboard though. But I welcome anything that could be considered an improvement, of course.

I'd rather see site-specific haptic-feedback, personally. When SMS messaging I lived in constant fear, thinking I possibly didn't get a response to a touch entry. It would be nice to not have to visually verify everything.
