iOS 4.3.1 Animations?

Sometimes I notice the animations aren't always as smooth? Like when opening up mail, then switching to safari and going back to mail when its still opened. I don't have many apps running. As a new iPhone user, I want to know if this is normal? I'm assuming it is then again I haven't head the greatest things about iOS 4.3.1?
